This is my last interview of my friends from OBS – sure was fun getting to know them all better. I hope you also enjoyed it!

click on Her Logo Fish to visit her eBay Store!

This day’s victim, LOL, is Cat and she has some great info and stories for you!

1 – Please tell me about yourself and why you are an eCommerce entrepeneur?

The truth? It started out as a way to get rid of a bunch of stuff we had in storage after we sold our convenience stores. Then I started thinking of it as a way to supplement my Pet Sitting income. Now – I find I enjoy the challenge of selling online. I like finding stuff that I THINK will do well – and then seeing if it does. I’ve always loved antiques and this is a great way to incorporate my love of things old with owning my own business.

2 – how did you pick your business name and what you sell?

LOL….the name Sushiboofay comes from a woman I use to work with. She had a real southern drawl — and one day a bunch of us from work went out to eat at a Chinese place and they had a buffet. Someone commented that they had a sushi buffet and in this voice that sounds like melted butter she says…. “Suushii Boo Fay….sounds like a ‘lady of the evening’”…..Years later I still remembered that and how we all loved the name and had a great laugh over it….so when I started thinking about store names….that’s the one I went with!

As for selling – I sell a little of everything. Right now I’m getting into selling records and vintage clothes. I also have some Gone With The Wind plates that belonged to me, but we just don’t have room for – so I’ve been listing them. Next month – it will probably be something else. I love to keep updating!

3 – what online venues are you currently selling on and are there others you plan to expand to in the next year?

I primarily sell on EBay, but I’ve been fascinated by Bonanzle so list there too. I’m also on Amazon and iOffer. I use Sushiboofay on all of the sites right now so people can remember it and easily find me on whatever venue I may be on.

I will probably be on GEMM next. I’ve heard some good things about them and sounds like a great place to list record albums!

4 – What are your goals for your business in the next year?

I really want to push my online business to the next level. I have down as official goal for this year that I would like to make EBay Power Seller by July 1st — got a long way to go, but I love a good challenge!

Cat's Bonanzle Booth

(click on the Bonanzle logo to visit Cat’s Bonanzle booth)

5 – Tell me a favorite story about your eCommerce career.

I don’t really have a story about my career, but I do have a favorite customer. I sold a vintage cookie jar to a woman in Canada. I didn’t have “worldwide” marked, but she bid and won anyway (pretty big amount). She had ONE feedback. I just knew this was going to end badly — but then she wrote that she wanted to give it as a gift to her mother because they had one when she was growing up and it would bring back a lot of memories. I had to rethink the shipping — took about a week to get all my ducks lines up — I still wondered if it was going to turn out well or not….but I took a chance and sent it.

She was just thrilled went it arrived. Gave me some of the best feedback I had ever gotten. THAT made me feel good about taking a chance on someone….knowing there are still some decent people out there and I made one of them happy!

Cat is also a writer and has some of most FUN signature lines on our group. Here is the current one! click on the image to visit her blog.

I have so enjoyed getting to know Cindy. She is a fellow Rock Star ALA Janelle Elms, and belongs to a busy email group I’m also a part of. I’ve also learned so much attending classes, webinars and watching videos she has put together. Cindy is a treasure and I’m so glad she is willing to share so much of her knowledge with her friends! Before I get to the interview, I wanted to show you one of Cindy’s videos. The problem is – there are so many! Cindy knew video was the ‘hot’ thing way before most of us were aware that it was even possible to upload video to the web without a huge production studio! She probably has hundreds of instructional and fun videos on You Tube By now. Click here to visit Cindy’s Channel on You Tube.

Choosing a Camcorder by Cindy

I chose the video above because Cindy was the first person to bring the FLIP camera to my attention and I’m so glad she did! I’m now the proud owner of TWO! (both purchase online and used, of course!) and I appreciate her educating me to some of the many things this little wonder can do. And now, on to the interview . . .

1 – Please tell me about yourself and why you are an eCommerce entrepreneur?

I’m Cindy Shebley I’m an eBay Certified Business Consultant and Education Specialist. I’ve been a retail store owner since 1990. I used to own a traditional bricks and mortar store, a garden center. The thing about having a physical location is you never get away. I wanted a way to spend less time tied to the shop, while still working for myself. Then one day a friend told me about this great little site on the web called “eBay.” I checked it out and was hooked. We had inventory in the back store room that wasn’t selling and I thought I’d give this eBay thing a try…. after the stock room was cleared out I started thinking of other things I could sell. One thing lead to another and now I’m a full time online seller.

2 – how did you pick your business name and what you sell?

I have lots of dogs and cats – one cat, a tabby named Clover – she ruled the household. We used to joke about her being the “mayor of TabbyTown” – don’t ask me how, but that morphed into CloverCity. When I went online I wanted to sell something that was less seasonal than gardening and over time I rediscovered my love of photography. Now, I sell mostly photo lighting equipment, books and tools to help eBay and Online sellers.

3 – what online venues are you currently selling on and are there others you plan to expand to in the next year?

I sell on eBay, Amazon, Bonanzle, occasionally on Etsy and my own website. You can find me at:

eBay – www.clovercityphoto.com

Amazon – http://amazon.com/shops/clovercity

Bonanzle – http://www.bonanzle.com/booths/websellerscircle

Website: http://www.ghostleg.com

And my blog – http://clovercitysells.blogspot.com/

4 – What are your goals for your business in the next year?

I’ve found over the last few years I really enjoy coaching others. With that in mind my goal is to open a coaching and mentoring program. To that end I am about to open The Web Sellers’ Circle at http://websellerscircle.com – we expect it to be fully functional in June.

5 – Tell me a favorite story about your eCommerce career.

Surprisingly I’m not much of a collector – so stories about the stuff I sell now are pretty dull – I’ve sold a few things for others that were fun. An art glass collector hired me to teach him how to sell on eBay. When I arrived at his home, every surface was covered in art glass – Fenton, Chihuly, Tiffany, Steuben, etc. Well, I was amazed. He had so much that not only did I get him set up selling – I helped him sell some of the more valuable pieces. It’s pretty exciting to sell vintage art.

Another dropped off a box of vintage Barbie dolls and clothes from the early 1960’s. I spent hours sorting through and putting outfits together. She never lost pieces, so there were lots of complete outfits. Between the outfits and the Barbie bubble cut heads, Kens and body parts – LOL, actually a little creepy – we made enough for her and hubby to take a cruise. She bought a modern Ken doll and photographed him a board the ship and emailed them to me everywhere they stopped.

Can’t wait to follow your future, Cindy and I’m so glad to count you as a friend!

Kat

Now, Marshell (accent on the SHELL!) is one of those neat people that you are sometimes fortunate enough to meet. Her positive attitude in the midst of some rather frustrating life events has impressed me many times through the months I’ve known her and her quest for knowledge is inspiring! So here she is . . . .

Marshell & Jimmy

1 – Please tell me about yourself and why you are an eCommerce entrepreneur?

I am a 49 (almost 50) grandma, mother, engaged to the most wonderful man on earth; and I love the Internet! Selling online to me is addictive…once you get really, truly interested in it, you can not get away…I’ve actually had withdrawals!! LOL

My boyfriend and I had started selling on eBay to get the extra money to buy a house and get married. I started selling on eBay as jaw1260, then went on as Jimmy and Marshell in a store. We decided the eBay store was too much to handle, so we closed it and went to Bonanzle

2 – how did you pick your business name and what you sell?

The business name was easy – Jimmy and Marshell is our “brand”. I want my buyers to see me, and get to know me. I want them to feel they can ask me anything; to be able to talk freely to me.

I love collectibles, and have a lot of ’stuff”, so selling it is fun and profitable. And I love people, so this is a good job for me. I like it when I sell someone something they have been looking for.

3 – what online venues are you currently selling on and are there others you plan to expand to in the next year?

We are currently listed on Bonanzle, as JimmyandMarshell . I also sell as an affiliate for “The Baby Newspaper”

I intend to buy the software myself after we get moved and I have more room; then I can start this business as my own. It has so many possibilities…all for around 67 dollars! I’ll be able to sell online, but also from my home to folks locally. It’s just a great program.
We are still on eBay, just have not listed any auctions for a while. I want to start listing there again, too. I’m working on my own sellers website. I have a mock up written but no server for it yet. This will take time…

4 – What are your goals for your business in the next year?

Next year? Well, first off, I want to be in a position where we can have the baby newspaper going, and I would love for Jimmy The Junk Man to take off. I know it’s not strictly online, but I can, have and will sell some of the items he has found while junking.

5 – Tell me a favorite story about your eCommerce career…

Well, it all started with Jimmy junking! He had a can of stuff in the back of my truck to take to the local junk yard. I’m curious by nature, and of course I went to investigate. In one of the cans i found a watch fob…he said it was just junk. I said it was worth money!
I was right! It was a 1926 gypsy tour watch fob that went for 60 some dollars on eBay! So, now, he comes and gets me to look over his “junk” for my junk” LOL!!! Showed him!

1 – Please tell me about yourself and why you are an eCommerce entrepreneur?

I’m a veteran mail order seller in the collectibles area. Did that for 30+ years. Depression Glass, Art Pottery and then in the 90’s Action figures. I’m in eCommerce because no one wanted to hire a short, fat, mouthy 55 year old when I needed a job again. So I went from “hobby seller” to Powerseller in 30 days.

2 – how did you pick your business name and what do you sell?

We’ve gone thru a couple of names. I was Action Figure Alley back in the 90’s (even on eBay and Amazon). I wanted Queen of the Auctions but Lynn Draille beat me to it so since we always collected depression glass and we’d bought a mother lode of depression glass at an auction two weeks in a row, we became Depressionglasswarehouse on ebay.

3 – what online venues are you currently selling on and are there others you plan to expand to in the next year?

I sell on Ebay, Amazon, the Usenet Google groups, Bonanzle, Biblio and soon…my own website again. The expansion plans are to move to my own website. I’ll use eBay for quick turn over but put most stuff on my website for the long haul

4 – What are your goals for your business in the next year?

To increase sales by 20% – We did $49,000+ Gross Sales last year. I want $60K for 2009

5 – Tell me a favorite story about your eCommerce career.

Back in 1993, pre-ebay I used to buy cases of action figures at wholesale from manufacturers like Kenner/Hasbro (when Meg Whitman was their CEO), diecast from a Hotwheels/Nascar distributor, wholesale fromMcFarland Toys, etc. I had a very rudimentary website set up and got calls all month. I was selling about $3,000 a month in TOYS!! stuff like we bought my son at Woolworths or Kaybee. But I was getting them wholesale. In 1996, I met with a toy company employee at Toy Fair in New York and she mentioned they had a trailer load of a “chase figure” that had gone unclaimed. (well 2 different ones actually) Chase figures are the one figure in the box that is made in short supply for a variety of reasons, could be the modeling, generally it’s a villain or a female character. So I asked about buying a case or so. She came back about a month later and said $5.99 each. I think she thought I’d buy a case or 2. So I bought I think 20 cases of each. I sold the individual figures on my website and most went in the $50-60 range – some as high as $100. At the time in 1996, the Japanese economy was roaring and they were fanatical collectors of action figures in this toy line. So one afternoon I got a call from a man in California who wanted whatever I had left in those two figures. I said $500 a case – 12 figures to a case PLUS you pay shipping. He said yes. He paid by credit card for 12 cases, $6,000 and I shipped them that day. HE was taking them as “baggage” on a plane to Japan later that week and he already had a deal to get $100 a piece for the figures. So he doubled his money on each case and I got about an 1000% profit ($600 divided by $60) . In fact, with that money and some savings, we closed down our ebay store and traveled thru Europe for 5 weeks. I hope to make another “wise” investment like that any day now. (from my mouth to God’s ears).
